Target Audience

Innovation and entrepreneurship are the drivers of economic growth and the main sources of value and wealth creation. We think that HEC Executive MBA participants, being actors of change, will be involved in one way or another in innovation and entrepreneurship topics.

This Major Entrepreneurship and Innovation (E&I) is intended for participants concerned by launching innovation or new business either as part of an established firm and will be a member or a manager of an innovation development team, or they have a personal project of business creation regardless what the innovation is about (e.g. technology, usage, market or business model).

Hence this Major will address both how to drive innovation within the firm and how to enhance entrepreneurial leadership.

Locations and academic partners

State your preference for one of the two following options:

  • Option USA
Two one-week sessions: Paris (May), Boston, USA (October)
E&I from the European and American perspectives
    Academic partner: Babson College
  • Option China
Two one-week sessions: Paris (May), Hangzhou & Shanghai, China (October)
E&I from the European and Chinese perspectives
Academic partner: Zhejiang University (Entrepreneurship & Innovation Research Centres)

Context

Considering the importance of innovation as a growth driver, its management needs to be addressed as such within the firm-with the same rationalization and involvement as the other business functions. However more than for the other functions of the firm, its management needs to find a balance between creativity, divergence, freedom, flexibility, emergent ideas and processes, routines, optimization, convergence...etc.
Furthermore, during a turmoil period, innovation is absolutely needed to renew and stimulate products/markets in addition to cost optimization and downsizing, highlighting critical issues to address for senior managers.

Objectives

Key learnings will be about:

  • How to develop an entrepreneurial energy and a culture of innovation? What are the values, the resources and the processes?
  • How to collaborate with other players and specialists inside and outside the firm as well?
  • What are the best practices for developing innovation involving experimentation, learning and prototyping?
  • How to identify and select an opportunity?
  • How to build a business plan and how to capture the value created?
  • How to fund the venture and how to gain support within and outside the firm?
  • How to develop the venture?

Content

Through case discussion and analysis, sharing of experience and team work, participants will develop a better understanding of the conditions required to build and maintain new business and the drivers for successful innovative offers whether it is within established firms or in new ventures.

The Major will provide the concepts and the tools necessary to address a broad range of sectors (e.g. manufacturing, service, telecom, media and entertainment industries...etc.) and types of innovations (e.g. technological innovation, services, digital business models...etc.). The network economy and the mass collaboration model will be specifically studied as well.
